Water Hawthorne - Aponogeton distachyus – lily-like-aquatic winter plants. I interplant them in the same pots as my water lilies since they have opposing seasons. I love them and they are just starting to wake up. Should be discouraged in earth bottom ponds as they spread rapidly from seed. My fish eat the seeds in lined pond. You can plant them in their own containers or just make a hole in the lily pot’s soil and press them in. They won’t grow much till the temps drop some more. I love them, but if they are in their own pot remember don’t throw them out in the summer while they are dormant. They are bare root and cost $7.50 each plus shipping. We’ll have better availability in a few weeks when the weather is cooler. Only a few plants have 1 leaf up right now. Water Hawthorne is a great flowering plant that thrives from early fall until late spring when the water is cold. Grows and blooms in cool/cold water of late fall until summer and goes dormant in warm water. The white fragrant flowers are present from September until April. The flowers are held above the mottled foliage that is oblong green. The undersides of the leaves are red in color. Flowers have a slight vanilla fragrance. GROWING TIP: can be planted in the same pot with a water lily. They are dormant when the lily is blooming and the Water Hawthorne is active, growing and blooming when the water lily is dormant. Example: If they are planted without lilies in an 8”pot then 3 to 5 per pot would be fine. The leaves float on the water and are long and narrow. Mature plants would have about a 12” spread. 5 plants in an 8” pot might cover 1-1/2 – 2’ square. Hardy to zone 4 or higher - You can see the flowers blooming right through the ice!
