A Few Words About Test Kits

Kit Testing
Knowing how and when to test is the secret behind successful testing. Again, keeping records of test results is the key to understanding your pond and its special needs. No two ponds are alike so your records indicate the appropriate measures suited to your particular pond. We would like to familiarize you with some important information about testing and test kits too extensive for this newsletter, so we have the following informational articles available for your perusal in our Library.

These tips apply to pH regulation and Dissolved Oxygen levels needed for a healthy pond.

  • Keep your pump running 24 hours a day
  • Be sure your pond volume turns over the water no less than twice hourly.
  • Create turbulence with streams, or waterfalls, spitters and fountains.
  • Minimize algae blooms and many submerged plants

Reagent vs. Test Strips

Most manufacturers provide quick dip test kits and having wont hurt however, we prefer the liquid test kits because the vials can be attached to a pole and samples can be taken from inner areas where the readings will be more accurate.  . *Note Liquid test kits use regent, a chemical that produces the measurements. Reagents in test kits normally have a short shelf life (about 1 year) after which they can produce misleading results.

Test your water at an even temperature above 65 Degrees  F. even if you have to bring the water indoors to let the test vial warm up. Failure to do so will skew your test results. 

  • Take the sample a few feet from the edge of the pond and a few inches below the surface.
  • All vials should be cleaned after every use and recapped to prevent contaminants from skewing your results.
  • Always use the cap to close and mix the contents. Remember to use the cap -- you are testing the pond water-- not your fingertip chemistry.
  • Finally, keep a diary of the results.  Like all other testing, you will have a benchmark and be able to keep tract of how your pond is doing. Accurate records are essential to spotting potential problems before it is too late.
