Pond Design
Location and size are the two most important decisions you'll make about your water feature. By some estimates, 90 percent of the original water gardens sold are replaced later with larger ones. An enthusiastic pond hobbyist always finds new plants or interesting fish to add to his investment. As a general rule, a 180 square-foot or 11' x 16' pond is a good "standard" size water feature. Trace your prospective pond out on the ground with a garden hose to help you visualize what the finished size will be.
Building a water garden should be a fun, creative, and enjoyable process. Unfortunately, water feature construction is often time consuming and frustrating. Regardless of the type of pond you choose to build, you will be installing a system of pond elements that work together to keep your pond clean. The type of container you choose, its location, the pump, filters, waterfalls, pipe size, plants, fish type and quantity all come together in your pond to form a system. Manufacturers of individual pumps and filters claims must be tempered with the reality of how the filter or pump works in combination with the other elements of your design. The best pump, fitted to an undersize pipe, will not circulate water per the specification on the pump box.
Below we will describe two systems that meet the above criteria. Weather you are adding to an existing pond or need a complete pond kit there are systems to meet your needs. The filters and skimmers can be purchased as individual components or as a complete system. Read the information look at the illustrations and decide if one is right for you. The pond and filter configuration drawings take into account the interaction of various pond elements. The combination of elements suggested has proven in practice to work well together and require only minimal maintenance. Keep in mind these are self-contained bodies of water. They need a properly designed recirculating filter system including keeping the water clean and healthy.
