The Art of Pond Calculations

Take the time to calculate the volume of water in your pond. This information is vital for your plan, and will save thousands of dollars over the life of your pond by helping in the selection of suitable components & the appropriate pump to minimize maintenance & energy cost.

We suggest you size the pump to the water volume then size the filter to the pump as follows:

  • Circulate the entire volume of water every hour but at least every two hours.
  • Once the pump is chosen then size the filter to the pump, pressurized UV filter is preferred
  • Chose a pressure filter with a built in UV if possible or you will need a separate pump to suit the UV.
  • We also suggest a skimmer and waterfall filter combination to enhance the filtration and protect the pump and provide aesthetics, sound effects and additional aeration.

7.48 gallons per cubic foot.
1 cubic foot = 7.48 gallons.

1' Length x 1' width x 1' depth = 1 cubic foot
Cubic feet are measurements of Volume

All water features can be broken down into one or more of these shape categories. Volume Calculations for each shape is listed for you below. For "odd-shaped" water features, simply break down the water feature into smaller categories that fit into the shapes listed below - then add them all together for a close approximation of volume and gallons.

For multiple, or variable depths - use an "Average Depth" measurement in the Depth calculations below.

Volume of a Rectangle

Length x Width x Depth = Cubic Feet.
Cubic Feet x 7.48 = Total Gallons.

Volume of a Square

Length x Width x Depth = Cubic Feet.
Cubic Feet x 7.48 = Total Gallons.

image0037r

Volume of a Triangle

(Length x Width) x .5 x Depth = Cubic Feet.
Cubic Feet x 7.48 = Total Gallons.

Volume of an Ellipse or Oval

3.14 x (Length x .5) x (Width x .5) x Depth = Cubic Feet.
Cubic Feet x 7.48 = Total Gallons.

image0055r

Volume of a Circle or Cylinder

3.14 x (radius* x radius*) x Depth = Cubic Feet.
Cubic Feet x 7.48 = Total Gallons.

* radius = ½ diameter

Volume of a Half Circle

3.14 x (Radius x Radius) x .5 x Depth = Cubic Feet.
Cubic Feet x 7.48 = Total Gallons.

Radius = ½ diameter

Volume of a Quarter Circle

3.14 x (Radius x Radius) x .25 x Depth = Cubic Feet.
Cubic Feet x 7.48 = Total Gallons.

Radius = ½ diameter

Volume of a Circle Section (Pizza Slice)

Degree of Arch x (Radius x Radius) x Depth = Cubic Feet.
Cubic Feet x 7.48 = Total Gallons.

Volume of a Trapezoid

A 4 sided figure with one pair of parallel sides.
(Length 1 x Length 2) x .5 x Depth = Cubic Feet.
Cubic Feet x 7.48 = Total Gallons.
