Aquatic Plants: The Key to Successful Water Gardening

Aquatic plants are the single most important element in a water feature. They provide beauty, shade, and protection for fish, but the greatest benefit is in the filtration ability of plants. There are 4 basic types of plants:

Deep water: Water Lilies either of variety Hardy or Tropical with blossoms that are uniquely varied, lilies are almost always the focal point of any pond. Extraordinary blossoms and beautiful foliage contrasts with the waters surface and provides shade and cover for fish.

Shallow water: Create a natural transition from shallow water to the ponds edge. A full range of foliage textures, heights and flowers are found here.  Lily Like: Shallow water plants provides shade and cover for fish.

Submerged: Grow below the surface and help combat algae growth by consuming excess nutrients. Acts to reduce toxic ammonia. Fast growing, baby fish love to hide in them.

Floaters: Float on the surface or can be planted. Excellent for use in bio or natural filters, streams, and areas of moving water.

Having lots of plants cuts algae growth by keeping the water relatively cooler and taking nutrients from competing algae.

For best results provide 50% – 70% surface coverage:
